Fly Tying

Here you'll find some twists on familiar themes along with some flies original to Carl Hutchinson. We have included these flies as we have found a way of either improving them or tying them in an unconventional way Check back for more flies in a regular basis

The Kotchka

This fly has caught more fish (and types of fish) than any other in our boxes! Carl Hutchinson originally came up with this design over 10 years ago and has (Finally) allowed us to use it.

Effect required

The fly should be tied slim and give a general buggy appearance. It can be used as a grub, a buzzer, a nymph, a shrimp and anything else that happens to fall into water world wide. This is the appeal. No matter what the fish are eating, the Kotchka will catch them!

Hook: Fine wire Grub/Emerger/Sedge Size 14-8
Thread: Brown 6/0
Body: combed Black cat fur (for luck!)
Back: Nymph rib (not glass)
Ribbing: 8lb Ashima Fluorocarbon.

Tying Method

1) Start tying thread and tie down the hook shank and back again.
2) Tie in the ribbing at the eye and tie in down the hook shank giving a smooth body.
3) With the thread still at the tail end, catch in the nymph rib with three turns of thread and dub the thread with a little cat fur and wind back to the eye.
4) Start ribbing the nymph glass up the back of the fly on the top of the hook with 5-7 turns and tie in both the nymph glass and the ribbing at the head.
5) form a neat (and quite large) head and whip finish
6) Varnish the head with clear varnish to finish the fly

for an Emerger version simply add some foam to the top of the head of the fly before finishing.

This fly can also be tied with hare's Ear and Seal's fur in Olive and black.
